My curiosity for Wasps

My outdoor porch, which measures approximately 8' by 10', allows two people to sit comfortably. Where I sit, there are two pictures two feet from my head, on the outside wall. One is a certificate from National Wildlife, recognizing the establishment of habitat at my site. The other is a small picture of tulips.

Several months ago a pair of wasps decided to build their paper fiber nest, with many combs, in back of the tulip picture. If I was sitting outside they would buzz me before entering. We learned to live together as each day, they would enter the nest in back of the picture. Several times the wasp buzzed around in front of me and also would buzz around my head. Just before he left for good, he came up to me and flew a circle in front of me , as if to say thanks for not interfering. I have since done research and find that this particular type of paper wasp will not sting if not threatened. There are also 75,000 different species. I have enclosed some pictures and sure hope they come back next year. This is another episode in the "wonderful world of nature".

Today I will discover yet another wonder of Nature. Its beauty surrounds me. The yellow and dry leaves are falling from my trees, as I write. It seems a little early but the trees have been shedding leaves in mid August for the past few years. The Hummingbirds are still enjoying their nectar. I wonder why the ants this year have climbed down the wire to drink the sweet water. I need to change the water often. I can hear the Chickadees and Titmice as they are feeding. I have a large feeder for sunflower seed and a tubular for thistle, which the Goldfinch sit on most of the day. I sometimes think they just pick out the seeds and drop them, for the fun of it. I must feed the 21 baby goldfish twice a day, as they are always hungry. I love my small fishpond, which I have enjoyed for many years. Last year, snakes and cats killed my fish but not before they produced a large offspring. So far, they are all alive and well but there are too many. Well, I will feed them well and let them grow!
